Hey, Dwight Kopp here with Forgotten Mountain. When it comes to window grilles, you’ve got all kinds of options to choose from.
Other Options
If you head over to Etsy, you can find adhesive window grilles—basically peel-and-stick strips that you attach directly to your glass. They’re easy to use, but they might not have the lasting appeal you’re looking for. You might also come across metal window grilles, which are definitely cool, but they tend to be heavy and a bit harder to manage.
Wood Window Grilles
Here at Forgotten Mountain, we prefer wood window grille inserts. We think they offer the perfect combination of class and practicality. They’re easy to remove when it’s time to clean the windows, and handling them is a breeze. Now, in the world of wood window grilles, there are different tools you can use to create them.
Router Cut:
One option is using a router. Router bits have been used for ages to create beautiful, three-dimensional textured shapes. However, depending on the router bits you have and your tooling setup, it might be harder to achieve the fine details you can get with a precision laser.
Laser Cut:
That’s why we use a precision laser, which cuts down to 1/1000th of an inch. This gives us a very fine, clean cut with no kerf, creating a tidy design that looks great and works well.
A Look at Window Grille History
The history of window grilles goes way back. Just take a look at the cathedrals in Europe—their extraordinary and beautiful fretwork and openwork have been inspiring for centuries. These architectural features were often designed to tell a story, convey the majesty of God, or produce a sense of wonder. We think window grilles are a wonderful way to bring that same interplay of light and darkness, shade and sunshine, into your home, adding beauty and enhancing the space.
The Benefits of Wooden Window Grille Inserts
One of the great things about wooden window grille inserts is how lightweight they are. This makes them super easy to handle and install on your own—no need to hire a contractor. Of course, if your contractor happens to be your husband and you’d like to see him more, by all means, bring him on board!
