Accurate Window Grille Measurements Made Easy with A Paper Template

Hi, Dwight Kopp here with Forgotten Mountain.

Make a Paper Template

I want to show you how to create a paper template for your window. You might need this if you have a window with an unusual shape or if you’d just like me to double-check your measurements. For this demo, I’m using an old transom window we pulled out of our house.

Prepare the Paper

Cut a piece of paper slightly larger than your window opening—big enough to cover the glass, but not oversized. Trim it down so it’s easy to handle. (Always use a sharp knife for clean edges.)

Crease the Paper Into Place

Use a factory edge or a straight edge along the bottom of the glass and press it tight into two sides of the window. With your fingernail, crease along the edges of the glass. If you need to relieve tension at the corners, snip a small 45° cut so the paper can fold more easily. Don’t worry if it tears slightly—just make sure your creases mark a tight, accurate outline of the glass.

Cut Along the Crease Lines

Follow those crease lines with a sharp knife or X-Acto blade. A straight edge helps keep your cuts clean. Once cut, test-fit the template on the glass to make sure it fits snugly on all sides.

When you’re happy with the fit, label your template with your name, chosen pattern, color, and contact info, then mail it to me. I’ll measure it precisely and send back a final quote before we move it into production.

Once your order is in, it typically takes about 7 days for us to cut, paint, pack, and ship it your way.

Hope that helps!
