Custom Window Grilles

Custom Window Grilles

So I’ve had several people reach out to me lately regarding custom window grilles. Now, of course, every grille that we make is made to order. It’s sized exactly for the window that it’s going to be installed in, but every now and then we get interesting window shapes and sizes. A lot of those are long transoms, and I’ll show you some pictures here with long transoms over bathroom vanities or the top end of bathroom walls.

Windows in Showers (Really?)

I did have sort of a funny conversation with a customer this week who was interested in a grille for her shower, which we couldn’t help her with. Our particular material isn’t great for a high moisture environments like inside a shower, but she told me that her neighbors were kind enough to let her know that they could see in through the bathroom window while she was showering. So that’s a little awkward…

Unusual Shaped Grilles

[You can’t find these at Lowes!]

We occasionally get into some fun window shapes. I’ll show you a process here for an arched window grille that we’re making. Sometimes with windows like this, we have to add an extra step in which we send out a template with basically the perimeter shape cut out to make sure that we’re not just making beautiful firewood. We like to make sure that it fits exactly for each project.

Custom Grille Design Process

I was able to determine the radius of the arch and consequently was able to build the grille design that they were looking for. This customer here was looking for the champagne design, and so we incorporated that into a two-part window grill insert fern arched window. Once we have the overall shape hammered out for the design piece, we import the pattern, make sure that renders correctly.

PDF Proof

Then usually we send a PDF proof to the customer so they can give us a thumbs up.

Generally, we don’t need to do a PDF proof unless it happens to be an odd shaped window like this. We want to make sure that they like the finished result.

Mock-Up

Sometimes I’m able to complete a mock-up. Then we drop the grille into place to see what it looks like to make sure that we’ve got it right, add some perspective and get a pretty close rendering as to what this is supposed to look and feel like when it’s in its final place.

Anyway, there it is. That’s process for our building custom window grills. Feel free to check out our website www.forgottenmountain.com to see some of the other projects that we’ve been working on. Thanks. See you.
